Robin Leach is reporting that Penn & Teller will celebrate the 20th Anniversary of their first Vegas show on February 8th at their current casino home The Rio All Suites Hotel and Casino. He goes on to say that this will likely be when they officially announce their new six-year extension.

No word yet on if it’s open to the public, but we’ll let you know if we hear anything.

Penn & Teller to Perform 20-Year Old Routine to Celebrate Anniversary

skitched-20130207-120654.jpgIt’s been two decades since Penn & Teller first performed in Las Vegas and to celebrate the occasion, the duo is dusting off the first routine they debuted with at Bally’s Casino.

According to Robin Leach, there are a few routines in there that haven’t been seen since:

Two of the three pieces from 20 years ago haven’t been seen in Las Vegas since. I also can confirm our earlier scoop that Caesars Palace and Rio President Gary Selesner will announce their astounding six-year contract extension from the stage. It will be followed by a celebration hosted by the good folks at our sister publication Vegas Magazine.

Interesting to see P&T, who have been a model case for evolution and refinement dig through the nostalgia bin for a one night only affair.

Are Penn & Teller Responsible For Transforming Vegas’ Reputation?

penn teller 20th anniversary.jpg

As the milestone stories pour in reflecting on Penn & Teller’s 20 year anniversary of their first Vegas performance, Mike Weatherford brings up an interesting question.

How much credit should P&T receieve for transforming Sin City’s reputation as a place where once-great performers went to cash in to a vibrant arts destination? He quotes Penn on what their plan was taking up residency at the Rio.

The duo arrived just when Las Vegas was starting to shed its image as an elephant’s graveyard for has-been performers, and arguably helped quicken that shedding process.

“The general idea of Vegas is you get your act together, and you come here and do that same act until you die. That was not the Penn & Teller plan. The Penn & Teller plan was to come here and live and do what we do with our lives.” …

It’s an interesting idea. If such a data set existed, I’d be curious to see if there was a net change in additions to an act before and after when Penn & Teller moved in. Not to say that they invented the concept, but you couldn’t argue that they didn’t contribute to making it cool.

Penn & Teller Shooting Pilot for New “BS”

penn teller bullshit.jpg

Well technically, Penn and Teller won’t be bringing back the very popular (and highly internet relevant) series Bullsh!t. But they are shooting a new pilot. And it will deal with skeptical issues.

The news came to light during their 20th Vegas Anniversary performance on Friday.

“It’s sort of … about all I can tell you is it’s related to ‘Bullsh*t’ in that it’s a skeptical show,” Teller said. “It’s a different style, though. There are some similarities in format, but it’ll be a breezier show.”

The show is to be set in Vegas.

“I doubt we’ll be shooting in different locations,” Teller said. “It’s just a pilot at this point.”

Penn said the pilot would be delivered “really soon,” and added, “We’re looking at a series that would start in the summer, and that’s really quick in showbiz terms. But it’s going to be Penn & Teller, yeah. That’s all we know how to do.”

The topic-centric nature of BS has proven to be specifically prescient in the new media world. As illegal YouTube rips of the series are regularly cited (both positively and negatively) whenever the hot button topic they covered begins to heat up again. A recent example? See “Control, Gun“.

A bigger question is how this series will differ from Disocvery’s Penn & Teller Tell A Lie, which as that time was touted to be the heir apparent to BS. Only time will tell…

A Method Used by the Best Magicians in the World Just Got Revealed as Scientifically Useless

There are few how have become more famous in the modern era for the cups and balls than Penn and Teller. So if PBS was looking to track exactly how anyone fooled any audience with the venerable old routine, it makes sense it was them.

And it would also make sense that the study would ask P&T why they think the trick works. And mostly, they’d be found to be right. Except for one little concept.

In addition, magicians often say that success with illusions depends on how well they can use gazes and faces to manipulate where audiences look, Macknik explained. The researchers tested this idea by hiding Teller’s face on the video clips with a black rectangle, and found doing so apparently did not affect the illusion.

‘We’re showing a discovery that magicians missed because they relied on their intuition, and their intuition was wrong,’ Macknik said.

The full report has yet to be released, but it seems to indicate that social cues might be a very overrated element of magic in general.

The Apprentice - The Wolf in Charge of the Hen House - Video - NBC.com.jpg

Celebrity Apprentice is back! And with it comes the second tour of duty for Penn Jillette, who has been vitriolic on subject of the Donal Trump’s business simulator.

He survives the first week, which involved meatball making. But Jillette wasn’t a major factor. His team (the slightly less dysfunctional of the two) won the challenge by a large margin. All of the board room histrionics, which included one-time Penn agitator Piers Morgan, focused on the other side.

For those keeping track, Poison frontman Brett Michaels was “fired”.

The big question for fans of Penn Jillette has been why is he going back on the Celebrity Apprentice after he had such critical things to say about his first experience. In his typical candor, here is the answer: because why not?

Jillette says that with a hole in the schedule for Teller’s Tempest production, it just made sense to do the show again.

He goes on to lay out his strategy for winning (there is none) and much more in the clip.

Also, apologies to Penn for forgetting his birthday yesterday. The larger and louder half of Penn & Teller turned 58.

Penn Jillette: Donald Trump is Scrooge McDuck

After two tours of duty on Celebrity Apprentice, Donald Trump seems to be Penn Jillette’s favorite analysis target. Sometimes it’s been coarser than others but it seems as if Penn’s softened on his stance.

In this video by Big Think, Penn describes Trump as a real-life Scrooge McDuck who embodies the artistic trope of the arrogant plutocrat. This is a good thing as it allows our culture to vent and deal with wealth accumulation. Or at least I think that’s what he’s saying.

Penn Jillette explains the link between his day job as a magician and his gig as a contestant on the Celebrity Apprentice.

“When you tell other people to do stuff they don’t know how to do, they tend to freak out,” he says. “I’m a magician, I spend my whole life trying to figure out things I have no clue of how to do. Call me naive, but I love it when somebody yells out ridiculous stuff like, ‘Let’s sell cake!’ ”

Penn will try and continue his hone his cake-slinging skills this Sunday at 10 p.m. / 9 p.m. Central.

Penn Jillette Orchestrates Another Blue Man Group Donation Stunt on Celebrity Apprentice

The last time Penn was a Celebrity Apprentice contestant, he received a donation from The Blue Man Group. But never being one do anything without their signature flair, the iconic silent performers donated the cash by blowing it up in the big balloon and exploding it in the middle of Manhattan. The resulting cascading cash become a melee of swinging limbs, much to the chagrin of then-Penn rival Clay Aiken.

Penn defended the move in an essay on The Huffington Post.

This time, they were slightly more controlled. The troika chipped in $15,000 with all the bills folded into little origami squares and encased in massive jell-o molds.

Teller also tossed some cash in, $50,000 in bounded bills, via his assistant.
